Hi [wlm_firstname],
do you know what is Color Mapping and how to use it? It’s super-simple, learn it in 3 mins :
CONCEPTS:
- Always use LINEAR color mapping
- EXPONENTIAL is a “trick” to solve a problem: overexposure
- A typical situation: light source + interior
- Exponential solves your problem reducing the contrast (no way to avoid that!)
- Use “curves” to recover the contrast
- You can use V-Ray Curve correction, Photohop, Lightroom: it’s the same.
- Color mapping will NEVER change the beauty of your image, just solve a problem.
EXERCISE:
Download ES10 – Color Mapping | OBJ Version and do the same you watched in the video.
Watch to believe, try to understand.
Note:
Other color mapping (exponential HSV, Reinhard ecc..) are variations of “exponential”. We will talk about in future videos. Anyway the MAIN thing to understand is here.
I did not know how to use color mapping, its simple And quick to solve problemas with the exposure. Im glad to learn that now…
Thank you Very much, im waiting for the next lessons of vray 🙂
These tutorials are great, very well explained, easy to understand.
Thanks a lot.
I see you only use Exponential Color Mapping to avoid overexposure.
What do you think of Reinhard?
I would think this would be a viable option since you can use Burn Value as a slider between Exponential and Linear Style color mapping.
What’s you opinion?
Hi Kevin,
It depends on the “quantity” of the over exposure.
In Reinhard… burn value=1,0 it’s the same if you choose LINEAR
In Reinhard… burn value=0,0 it’s the same if you choose EXPONENTIAL
In Reinhard… burn value=0,5 it’s half-linear / half exponential
Personally I use frame buffer and I do all I can to use just LINEAR, since with EXP. you loose informations.
it’s up to you.
many thanks for your lesson , i don,t know what is color mapping before? when i see your lesson after i understand about color mapping ! Really your every lesson is very nice ! you are a Best teacher ! i respect you !
Ciro Sannino,
can you talk me ? Every time which color mapping i use, LINEAR or other? for best result Interior & Exterior render output . Which the best color mapping LINEAR ?
sorry my poor English !
Rana Kazi
Hi Rana,
there no BEST, there are different situations: as explained in the video if everything is regular use LINEAR. If you have overexposures and you can’t solve it with shutter speed, then use EXPONENTIAL.
Thank you Ciro Sannino,
now i understand !
